There is no need to mention that the cameras are much better on the phone. Still, I did. There is an unsaid effort by the brands to make the smartphone camera at the level of a professional camera like DSLR.
The first thing was the portrait mode. For this, they added a secondary camera like a zoom lens or a depth sensor. However, the software can so. The front camera does that with software and it does equally well and sometimes better. So hardware is not that important. For what it’s worth the portrait mode can be seen as the first step in the direction.
But the thing with this effort is the hardware limitation. I am not just talking about the physical sensor size difference between that of the DSLR and smartphone but also the choice of different lenses we have with the DSLR.
Lenses are a major part of a DSLR experience and offer modularity and different features to the overall set. This thing, the modularity and the choice of lenses, we can’t have in a smartphone. So to make up that difference, we got more lenses in a phone.
To make a larger sensor, we got a wider opening (which makes a greater pixel size) for the main camera. Or add a secondary camera that has a higher megapixel camera but uses pixel binning for larger pixel size. This larger pixel size helps in better low-light performance, a step closer to DSLR. Sometimes they also had added a monochrome sensor to capture the details in low-light scenes.
One also normal thing with the DSLRs is the variable aperture in the lenses. This was started by the Samsung Galaxy S9. The main camera has a variable aperture of f1.5 and f2.4. This is pretty ridiculously crazily interesting.
The next basic thing we have with DSLRs is the optical zoom in and out. The DSLR lenses are pretty much big and have the size advantage to do in one set as I mentioned. But on phones, we have to have two different cameras for zoom and a wide-angle lens.
Also, we can two fixed views and not an intermediate one. To make all this possible we already have 4 cameras for the rear. Many more are about to come with it. And that is just not it, we already have news Nokia 9 will have 5 cameras on its rear and 9 Camera phone is also in the way.
We also have other features like bokeh mode during videos and selective color production in photos and videos like in Some Huawei phones.
Phones can be action camera now
Recently the Motorola One Action got announced. It has a triple camera setup and one of the camera sensor can perform like action camera. Action camera are like the way that they are mounted they are to record the action without shaking and they are supposed to expereience extreme torture.
Since the phone is mounted in the vertical so the sensor is placed in a way (at right angle) that it records the video in landscape mode. It is an ultra-wide camera and employes EIS. However the phone is neither rugged nor water proof. So there is still limitation but there is progress.
And it is not just the end for the cameras, we don’t know what is going to get into the phone for the cameras. I hope we get meaningful tech rather than just gimmick like the secondary depth sensor that we mostly have in the budget segment.
Do let me know, what you think about this? Maybe we can have something fun or important to discuss the future of the cameras in smartphones.
I am mad about gadgets especially smartphones. I like to help people deciding their phone. I love talking about gadgets and also share whatever I know about them.
